The story opens in Afghanistan, where a Staff Sergeant (Alan Ritchson) attempts to rescue his brother’s military convoy. The attack leaves his brother dead and the Sergeant with a severe knee injury. Driven by grief, he enrolls in the brutal U.S. Army Ranger boot camp to complete his brother’s dream.
During the squad’s final training exercise in a remote forest, what appears to be a falling meteor crashes into the drill site. The object turns out to be an autonomous, heavily armored extraterrestrial killing machine. Armed with high-powered energy weapons and advanced tracking systems, the alien machine systematically hunts down the recruits.
Utilizing his background as a combat engineer, Recruit 81 realizes the killing machine relies on a thermal ventilation system to prevent internal overheating. Luring the deadly drone into a nearby rock quarry, 81 dumps heavy debris into its intake vents, forcing the alien tech to detonate.
81 and Recruit 7 return to base as the sole survivors. Upon returning, Command reveals that the crash was not an isolated incidentβit was the first wave of a global invasion involving tens of thousands of alien war machines. Armed with knowledge of the machine’s fatal flaw, 81 is promoted into the Regiment to lead the Earth’s counter-offensive, setting up War Machine 2.
