Tuner (2026) – American Drama and Thriller Movie
Tuner is a 2026 American drama and thriller film directed by Daniel Roher, featuring Leo Woodall, Dustin Hoffman, and Havana Rose Liu in the leading roles. The movie combines music, personal relationships, ambition, and crime into an unusual story about a talented piano tuner whose extraordinary hearing changes the direction of his life.
Written by Daniel Roher and Robert Ramsey, Tuner explores the relationship between natural talent and personal responsibility. It also examines how unexpected opportunities can create difficult choices. With a distinctive premise and an experienced cast, the film brings together elements of music, romance, drama, and suspense.
Released in May 2026, Tuner marks an important narrative feature project for director Daniel Roher, who previously became known for his documentary filmmaking.
Overview of Tuner
Tuner follows Niki White, played by Leo Woodall, a young man with an exceptional ability to recognize subtle differences in sound. He works as a piano tuner in New York, helping musicians and piano owners maintain their instruments.
Niki’s life is closely connected to music, although his personal ambitions have not developed as he once hoped. He works alongside his mentor, Harry Horowitz, played by Dustin Hoffman, an experienced piano tuner who has become an important figure in his life.
Niki’s unusual hearing attracts attention beyond the musical world. People begin to recognize that his sensitivity to sound could be useful in unexpected circumstances. This discovery creates a new direction for his life and introduces challenges that he never anticipated.
The film also features Havana Rose Liu as Ruthie, a composition student who develops a connection with Niki. Their relationship adds an emotional dimension to the story and creates another important consideration as Niki faces difficult decisions.
Story and Plot
The central character, Niki White, has a special relationship with sound. His heightened hearing makes him particularly talented at tuning pianos, allowing him to recognize details that many other people would overlook.
Although he once had musical ambitions, his career has taken a different direction. He now spends his time working with his mentor, Harry Horowitz, travelling around New York and maintaining different pianos.
Harry is more than a professional mentor to Niki. He is someone who has supported him and helped him develop his abilities. Their relationship becomes an important foundation of the film.
Niki’s unusual talent eventually attracts the attention of people outside the music industry. They see another possible use for his abilities, introducing him to an unfamiliar environment and a series of difficult choices.
As Niki becomes involved in this new world, his everyday life begins to change. His professional responsibilities, personal values, and relationships are placed under pressure.
At the same time, he meets Ruthie, a composition student who shares his interest in music. Their growing connection provides a contrast to the uncertainty surrounding his other activities.
The story explores how Niki balances his feelings for Ruthie with his responsibilities towards Harry and the consequences of his decisions. What initially appears to be an unexpected opportunity gradually becomes a complicated personal journey.
Rather than presenting its central character as someone with simple answers, Tuner examines the conflict between ambition, loyalty, and responsibility. It asks whether a person’s natural talent should determine the direction of their life or whether personal values should remain the most important guide.
Cast and Characters
Leo Woodall plays Niki White, the central character. His performance brings together the character’s musical interests, unusual abilities, and personal struggles. Woodall is known for his work in television and film, and Tuner gives him a leading role in a character-driven story.
Dustin Hoffman plays Harry Horowitz, Niki’s mentor and an experienced piano tuner. Harry has an important influence on Niki’s life, and their relationship provides much of the film’s emotional foundation.
Havana Rose Liu appears as Ruthie, a composition student who develops a romantic connection with Niki. Her character represents an important part of his personal life and gives the story an additional emotional perspective.
Lior Raz plays Uri, while Tovah Feldshuh appears as Marla Horowitz. Jean Reno also features in the cast as Marius Maissner.
The supporting performers help create the wider world surrounding Niki, connecting his professional life with the personal and social challenges he encounters.
Direction, Music and Cinematography
Daniel Roher directs Tuner and co-writes the screenplay with Robert Ramsey. Known for documentary filmmaking, Roher brings his first narrative feature-directing project to the screen with a story built around music, character development, and suspense.
The musical dimension is especially important because the protagonist’s profession is connected to piano performance and sound. The film features an original score by Will Bates, with additional musical contributions associated with Marius de Vries.
Cinematography is handled by Lowell A. Meyer, whose work helps establish the atmosphere of New York and the environments in which the characters interact. Greg O’Bryant handles editing, shaping the film’s narrative flow.
The combination of music, performances, and visual presentation gives Tuner an identity that differs from a conventional crime thriller.
Why Watch Tuner?
Tuner may appeal to viewers who enjoy character-focused films that combine music, drama, romance, and suspense.
One of its most interesting features is its central concept: a piano tuner whose extraordinary hearing creates an unexpected direction in life. This unusual premise provides a foundation for exploring personal ambition and the consequences of choices.
Leo Woodall leads the story, while Dustin Hoffman brings experience and depth to the role of his mentor. Havana Rose Liu adds another important dimension through the character of Ruthie.
The film also offers an opportunity to see Daniel Roher working in narrative cinema after establishing his reputation through documentaries. Its combination of musical storytelling and dramatic tension makes it an interesting entry in 2026 American cinema.
