Baththa (2026) Movie Review, Story, Cast and Details

Baththa (2026) is a Tamil-language comedy-drama that brings together an unusual friendship, family emotions and gentle humour. Directed and written by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the film stars Vijay Sethupathi in the title role alongside Lijomol Jose and a talented supporting cast. Set in 1986 Madras, the story explores how an unexpected meeting can change the lives of two very different people.

Baththa Movie Story

The story of Baththa takes place in Madras during 1986. At the centre of the film is a timid eight-year-old boy whose ordinary day turns into an extraordinary experience when he accidentally locks a feared local criminal inside a school restroom. What initially appears to be a simple accident soon develops into an unusual situation for both characters.

The trapped man is accustomed to being feared and respected by people around him. However, being stuck in a confined place forces him to face a situation in which his usual influence cannot help him. The boy, meanwhile, must deal with the unexpected consequences of his innocent mistake.

As the story progresses, the two characters begin to understand one another. Their interaction creates opportunities for comedy, emotional moments and meaningful conversations. The film uses this unusual situation to explore human vulnerability, kindness and the possibility of personal change.

Rather than depending entirely on a conventional gangster storyline, Baththa focuses on the relationship between its central characters. This contrast between a feared adult and a nervous child gives the narrative its distinctive appeal.

Vijay Sethupathi in the Lead Role

Vijay Sethupathi plays the title character, Baththa. Known for taking on a wide range of roles, the actor brings an interesting screen presence to a character whose public reputation contrasts with his more vulnerable circumstances.

The role gives him an opportunity to explore both humour and emotion. His character’s situation creates several moments in which the audience can see a different side of a person who is usually treated with fear.

Lijomol Jose also plays an important role in the film as Kannima. The supporting cast includes Sai Prithviraj, Hari Krishnan, Sahasra Sree, Santhy Balachandran, Arjun Chidambaram and Ajay Ghosh. Together, the cast helps build the film’s world and supports its character-driven storytelling.

Direction and Screenplay

Balaji Tharaneetharan serves as both writer and director of Baththa. The film’s central idea is built around a simple but unusual incident, allowing the director to develop its characters through their interactions.

The 1986 setting gives the story a distinct atmosphere. Its period background helps establish the environment in which the characters live, while the screenplay balances comedy and drama. The contrast between the child’s innocence and the adult character’s intimidating reputation creates the foundation for the film’s emotional journey.

The story also explores how people can behave differently when they are separated from their familiar surroundings and social positions. This character-focused approach gives the movie more to explore than its initial premise might suggest.

Music and Technical Details

The music for Baththa is composed by Sai Abhyankkar. The soundtrack and background score contribute to the film’s atmosphere and help support its emotional and lighter moments.

Selvakumar S. K. handles cinematography, while R. Kalaivanan is responsible for editing. The production design helps recreate the period setting of 1980s Madras, giving the film a visual identity that matches its story.

The technical elements work alongside the performances and screenplay to create a blend of comedy, drama and family-oriented storytelling.
