The story begins with an ordinary family living a peaceful life in Kerala, but unexpected events gradually transform their world into a tense and emotional journey.

With its focus on family relationships, mystery, suspense, and powerful performances, Thudarum offers a different kind of cinematic experience for audiences who appreciate character-driven Malayalam films.

Thudarum Movie Details

Thudarum was released in Indian theatres on 25 April 2025. The film was directed by Tharun Moorthy, who co-wrote the screenplay with K. R. Sunil. It was produced by M. Renjith under the Rejaputhra Visual Media banner.

The movie features Mohanlal as Shanmugham, also known as Benz, and Shobana as Lalitha. Other important performers include Prakash Varma, Binu Pappu, Farhaan Faasil, Maniyanpilla Admin, and Thomas Mathew. Jakes Bejoy composed the music, while Shaji Kumar handled cinematography.

The original language is Malayalam, and the film combines crime, drama, mystery, and thriller elements.

Thudarum Storyline

The story follows Shanmugham, a taxi driver who lives with his wife, Lalitha, and their children in the quiet surroundings of Kerala. Known as Benz, he values his family and has a particularly strong attachment to his old black Ambassador car.

For Shanmugham, the vehicle is much more than ordinary transportation. It represents a meaningful part of his life and personal history. His daily routine revolves around work, family responsibilities, and maintaining the simple life he has built.

However, a series of unexpected events disrupts this peaceful existence. The circumstances surrounding his beloved car become increasingly complicated, and the situation develops into a mystery that affects the entire family.

As the story progresses, Shanmugham discovers that the problems facing him are far more serious than a simple disagreement or a missing possession. Hidden motives, difficult decisions, and troubling encounters gradually reveal the darker side of the situation.

The narrative builds tension by placing an ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances. His efforts to protect his family and understand what has happened form the emotional foundation of the film.

Rather than relying only on constant action, the story develops through character interactions, suspenseful revelations, and the consequences of each decision. This approach allows the audience to experience the changing circumstances alongside the central character.

Mohanlal as Shanmugham

Mohanlal plays the central character, Shanmugham, delivering a performance that combines everyday simplicity with emotional intensity. His character is presented as a family man whose priorities revolve around his loved ones and the life he has established.

The role gives Mohanlal opportunities to portray different emotional states as the circumstances around his character change. His reactions and expressions help communicate the pressure of a situation that gradually becomes more complicated.

For viewers familiar with Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal’s presence is one of the main attractions of the movie. The character-driven nature of the screenplay allows the actor to contribute significantly to the film’s atmosphere and emotional impact.

Shobana and the Supporting Cast

Shobana plays Lalitha, Shanmugham’s wife. Her character is important to the family-centred side of the narrative, providing emotional depth and helping establish what is at stake when the family’s peaceful life is disturbed.

The supporting cast adds further dimensions to the mystery. Prakash Varma and Binu Pappu appear in important roles, while Farhaan Faasil, Maniyanpilla Admin, Thomas Mathew, and other performers help build the world surrounding the central family.

These performances contribute to the film’s gradual development, allowing the tension to grow as different characters become involved in the unfolding events.

Direction and Screenplay

Tharun Moorthy directs Thudarum with an emphasis on suspense, realistic situations, and character development. The film begins with a familiar domestic setting before introducing developments that change the direction of the story.

This contrast between an ordinary life and an increasingly unsettling situation gives the screenplay its central appeal. The audience first becomes familiar with Shanmugham’s routines and personal attachments, making the later changes in his circumstances more meaningful.

The screenplay, written by Tharun Moorthy and K. R. Sunil, gradually develops the mystery instead of revealing every important detail immediately. This storytelling approach encourages viewers to pay attention to character behaviour and the consequences of seemingly small events.

The result is a film that blends emotional drama with the suspense associated with crime thrillers.

Cinematography and Music

Shaji Kumar’s cinematography helps establish the atmosphere of the film. The Kerala setting provides a recognisable backdrop for the story, while the visual presentation supports the contrast between domestic comfort and the growing uncertainty surrounding the main character.

Jakes Bejoy composed the music and background score. Music is an important part of a thriller because it can reinforce emotional moments and contribute to the tension of significant scenes.

Together, the cinematography, editing, and musical score support the film’s dramatic progression and help maintain audience engagement.

What Makes Thudarum Worth Watching?

One of the film’s main strengths is its focus on a relatable central character. Shanmugham is introduced as an ordinary person with familiar responsibilities, emotional attachments, and a strong connection to his family.

The story then explores how unexpected circumstances can challenge a person’s sense of security. This foundation gives the mystery an emotional dimension beyond the question of what happened.

Another attraction is the combination of Mohanlal and Shobana. Their performances contribute to the family drama, while the supporting cast helps develop the increasingly complicated circumstances.

Viewers who enjoy Malayalam thrillers with measured storytelling, suspense, and strong character performances may appreciate this film. It is also an option for audiences interested in the work of director Tharun Moorthy.

Technical Aspects and Production

Thudarum was produced by Rejaputhra Visual Media, with M. Renjith serving as producer. Its technical team includes cinematographer Shaji Kumar and composer Jakes Bejoy.

The production brings together familiar elements of Malayalam cinema, including a grounded setting, a family-centred premise, and a mystery that develops through the characters’ experiences.

The film’s runtime is approximately 163–166 minutes, depending on the listing. Its story uses this extended duration to establish the family environment and gradually develop the central conflict.

Final Verdict

Thudarum is a 2025 Malayalam crime thriller that centres on family, personal attachment, and the consequences of unexpected events. Mohanlal leads the film as Shanmugham, a taxi driver whose quiet life changes as a troubling mystery unfolds. Shobana and the supporting cast help give the story its emotional foundation.

Tharun Moorthy’s direction combines character development with suspense, while the cinematography and music support the film’s dramatic atmosphere.

For viewers who enjoy Malayalam cinema, crime mysteries, and performances led by experienced actors, Thudarum is a notable film to explore. Its blend of family drama and thriller elements gives the story an identity beyond a conventional action-focused movie.
